Last Monday wild man Steve Brill came and taught us about all the plants in the garden that we can pick off the ground and eat. While we were still inside the BRAC center I saw a crazy looking guy ask where the bathroom was, and I just knew it had to be “wild man Steve Brill”. Once we got into the garden he introduced himself and he went crazy in the garden picking up plants and eating them. He insisted on everyone trying the plants but all I could think about was what animal used it as a toilet.

This is poison ivy, Steve says not to eat it or else you’ll end up like the German lady in his story.

These are Mulberries, they taste very good… or so they say. I wouldn’t eat it…

On Monday last week, we went to the garden again. There were two men who caught fish from the river while we were there. One of them brought a collection of dead animals that he had caught before, like a puffer fish, shark jaws, and teeth. He also showed us some turtles he brought. When their presentation was done everyone split up into groups and we scavenged around Drew Gardens looking for worms and snakes. I ended up finding a homeless man sleeping inside the tunnel, I scared him away and some of the kids there started going crazy running around looking for him.

I got tired of that area of the garden so I followed around one of the men that came to visit. He was looking for snakes under rocks, I thought they would actually be a reasonable size, but they were only marginally bigger than the worms in the garden. At that point I was already tired of running around so I stayed by the river and watched the other people till the class was over.

At the watershed workshop they talked about how the sewer system is polluting the Bronx River, we have a very antiquated sewage system and it dumps its waste in the Bronx River so we have to find ways to improve this. We also poured some water over paper, I forgot why. Jeniffer discussed what a watershed is to the group and explained how at Drew Gardens the river mixes salt and fresh water.
