The Halloween Monster Mash was a smash!

It was a dark and stormy night... BRAC celebrated the spookiest day of the year with its own Halloween Party on Friday, October 31st from 5:30-8pm! Both children and adults enjoyed themselves with games, movies and fun. While the big screen showed A Nightmare Before Christmas with popcorn and snacks for the viewers (provided by parents and staff), the guests moved about the "Haunted House", the "Alien Autopsy" room (which was dark, eerie and very creepy and was the favorite for many) and party rooms to partake in the loud laughter and fun. Games such as Musical Tombstones and Mummy Wrap got students of all ages working together. Two piñatas, one 24" and another at 16", filled with candy and prizes, was the biggest trick for these partygoers, as it took many tries by all almost all present to break through to the treats inside. Overall, everything was great, and everyone had a fun and safe Halloween!

BRAC Education Department Joins the National Lights on Afterschool! Celebration

On October 16, 2008, BRAC invited the NY community to tour our galleries and education studios.

Lights On Afterschool! The Bronx River Art Center and the Afterschool Alliance celebrated the importance of afterschool programs on October 16th, for our Lights On Afterschool! program.

In communities today, 14.3 million children take care of themselves after the school day ends. Afterschool programs keep kids safe, help working families and inspire learning.

As part of the celebration, BRAC planned a gallery tour of the current exhibition, gave tours of our resident artist studios and provided the unique opportunity to look in on some of our art classes in progress.

BRAC's 2008 Sizzling Student Art Fair,
Benefit Sale & BBQ Was a Success!

Despite the threat of thunderstorms and the need to switch the location of the event, 135 people came out to celebrate the end of the Bronx River Art Center's summer semester. Students and their families, community partners and residents, volunteers from the corporate world and our growing student volunteer pool all came together with the BRAC staff to make this an enjoyable celebration.

Being a non-profit art center, one of our goals was to raise money to help cover some of our necessary costs, such as art supplies, electricity and teachers' salaries. Through our fundraising efforts, we put together an assortment of activities for our guests to enjoy: a bake sale, face painting, sketches by our students for "patrons", a basketball hoop shoot, the sale of our BRAC t-shirts, bags and lavender sachets, and even a hamster raffle. We are still tallying the results, but our other goal was to give everyone a great time.

We received incredible help from Goldman Sachs Community Team Works! 11 of their employees volunteered with us from 10am-6pm, in all areas of preparation: from setting up our art displays and preparing and cooking food, to taking pictures of the event and just being enthusiastic and willing to help. It was wonderful!

In addition, our Summer Youth Employment Workers - Andrew Estick, Lisbeth Rodriquez, Stephanie Rodriquez, Dominique Short and Diamond Wynn - are the best BRAC has had to date and were an enormous help to us. We wouldn't have been able to get through this summer session without you all.

Two events that were able to be held outdoors were a Raku Ceramic Fire along the Bronx River and a Mixed Media Collage that was installed along the fence that overlooks the river on Tremont Ave. Both of these activities drew the interest of passersby, letting all know that BRAC is here bringing creativity and strengthening the public square!

Another special thanks to Veronica and the people at the Earl Williams Agency branch of Allstate Insurance for donating $1000 to BRAC through their "Agent Hero" grant program. This will definitely be put to good use!

We had a great time with you all this summer, and we look forward to seeing you in the Fall!
