ART + FASHION - In The Community

Bronx Music Heritage Center
1303 Louis Nine Blvd
Bronx, NY 10459

The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is pleased to present a day of Art + Fashion, Pop-Up In the Community, with which we will celebrate the closing of our current exhibition, Africa: In Fashion & Fabric, and our FY16 series of exhibitions, produced while "in-residence" at the Bronx Music Heritage Center.

Join us on Saturday, June 4th from 1 - 4PM, for a FREE afternoon of fun, including an African Pop-Up Shop, sponsored by I-CAF, the International-Coalition for African Fashion. A portion of the proceeds from the Pop-Up shop vendors will go to benefit the Bronx River Art Center to help in our preparations for our move back into our restored building (due Fall 2016).

A wine and cheese reception will follow the days festivities, from 5 - 7 PM in the exhibition space at BMHC by suggested donation of $20 for adults, $10 for seniors, and $5 for youth. Please join us to thank our many "hosts" of the past five years as we close out our last year of programming away from our beloved building.

The International-Coalition for African Fashion (I-CAF) is a nonprofit industry association whose membership consists of designers, suppliers, manufacturers, retailers, media, and consumers with the common goal of promoting the mainstream sustainability of African fashion. Established in 2014, I-CAF embraces and raises awareness about African and African-Inspired fashion through content-driven events, networking, and collaborative initiatives. I-CAF continues to build and connect a global community that supports growth and sustainability in the African fashion industry on the continent and abroad for commercial consumption. The I-CAF African Pop-Up Shop will feature the latest in ready-to-wear African and African-Inspired Fashions. Vendors include Liberia's Vita Talie, Ethiopia's Hagereseb, Nigeria's Ankara Nimi and more.

Vita Talie is an ethical fashion lifestyle brand that fuses innovative designs with exotic textiles inspired by and from the continent of Africa, founded by sisters Jovita and Natalie Ross. Not only do they design extraordinary fashionable pieces, but they have a willingness to give back to both of their communities. All Vita Talie products are produced in the USA and handcrafted by local artisans in Accra, Ghana.

Hagereseb is all of us together, our identity, our history, our culture, our tradition, our heritage, our belonging. Our goal is to embrace and support "the Hagereseb lifestyle - the artisan craftsmanship of African villages" to be inspired and to help preserve the culture, traditions, language and talents that are passed from generation to generation. We hope to achieve this in small but meaningful ways, through the stories we tell and through our inspirational collections.

AnkaraNimi is your one-stop shop for all African Fabric and accessories. Our handmade items include T-shirts, hair accessories, jewelry, footwear, clutch/handbags, notebooks and iPad cases. Creating unique pieces that are beautiful, ready-to-wear and never mass produced. Be ethnically unique!

The Phoenix Queens of the Nation, Wisdom Born Zulu Chapter 29, is a community organizing Chapter of the Universal Zulu Nation, based in and organizing out of the South Bronx. The goals of the Phoenix Queens of the Nation are to Restore Balance to our communities, and Help, Encourage, Inspire and Empower each other and the people we serve. The Phoenix Queens will be modeling both traditional African garments and modern African-Inspired designs by local Bronx designers. The designers will also be selling their ready-to-wear garments and accessories at the vendor tables.

The African Pop-Up Shop, Fashion Show and more will take place on Saturday, June 4th, from 1PM to 4PM at BRAC's pop-up gallery at the Bronx Music Heritage Center. The Bronx Music Heritage Center is located at 1303 Louis Nine Blvd, off the Freeman St stop on the 2/5 Trains.
