The Bronx River Art Center (BRAC) is pleased to announce cu·li·nar·y, the fifth and final exhibition in our 2015 series focused on food and its importance for the health and well-being of Bronxites of all ages. The exhibition will open with a reception on Friday, December 4th, from 6pm to 9pm at BRAC's temporary gallery space at the Bronx Music Heritage Center (BMHC), 1303 Louis Nine Boulevard, Bronx, NY 10460
Our final exhibition in the Food Systems, Surroundings and Sensibilities series, cu·li·nar·y focuses on culinary art, as it relates to the preparation, cooking and presentation of food. Cooking and meal-making is a vital topic at a time when the Bronx faces a growing health crisis, where obesity and hunger are both rampant due to poor nutrition. The Bronx has the city’s highest rates of obesity, and twice the national average number of residents who admit to not being able to afford food in the past 12 months. Many residents say they do not have convenient or affordable access to fresh fruits and vegetables, resulting in the linked problems of hunger and obesity, because of the scarcity of healthy options in low-income neighborhoods.
