After months of hard work, students at the Bronx River Art Center are putting their creativity on display for the 2010-2011 student exhibition.
The special exhibit will feature the drawings, ceramics, and paintings of nearly 60 students.
This annual tradition has become a real self-esteem booster for students, said Liliana Candelario, the Bronx River Art Center's education associate.
"It makes them feel like professional artists," she said. "Their families and the community come to see the work. And their work is up in a real gallery where professional work is shown."
A free opening reception will be held at 4 p.m. tomorrow at BronxArtSpace on 305 E. 140th St.
The exhibit will feature digital images of the Bronx River, student portraits, ceramic bowls and masks, 3-D paintings and collages, drawings, and cartoons.
"Some of the kids got really experimental," Candelario said. "It's amazing what they did."
Founded in 1987, the non-profit Bronx River Art Center provides year-round art classes for youth and adults. The fee-based classes are all taught by professional artists and include sessions in painting, drawing, cartooning, ceramics, photography, and more. Scholarships are available.
In recent months, classes have been held in satellite locations while a new multimillion-dollar headquarters is being built. That building on Boston Road is expected to be completed within two years.
